Sokoto, Dec. 14, 2025 (NAN) The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has commenced the distribution of inputs to 2,000 Sokoto onion farmers as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing post-harvest losses in Nigeria’s food system.
Mr Muhammad Abu-Ibrahim, the Executive Secretary of NADF, made this known during the distribution of the inputs on Sunday in Sokoto.
Abu-Ibrahim, represented by a Director, Mr Mu’azu Ibrahim, described post-harvest losses as one of the major challenges faced in the country.
He said the support was to cushion the effect of losses encountered by onion farmers due poor seedlings and other associated challenges.
Abu-Ibrahim reassured that the government would continue to take steps to reduce under-investments in agriculture and urged the stakeholders to support government initiatives in order to attract more investments.
“What we are trying to achieve now is to identify the risk factors that need to be mitigated and the enabling environment that must be put in place to drive more investment into the sector,” the executive secretary said.

Abu-Ibrahim said NADF was established to provide holistic funding to the agricultural sector, with a focus on farmer productivity and profitability.
He added that Nigeria was blessed agriculturally across various regions and demographics, but emphasised the need to harness its potential for sustainable growth.
In his remarks, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Tukur Alkali, commended Federal Government for the support describing it as a lifeline to small holder farmers.
Wamakko, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Almustapha Alkali, said state government would continue to partner with Federal Government and other agricultural stakeholders on promoting value chains for economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction.
The Project Coordinator of the Sokoto State Agricultural Department Project, Alhaji Abubakar Danmaliki, said the support was critical to farming activities especially among small holder farming groups.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, the Chairman of Onion Farmers, Producers and Marketers Association, Alhaji Aliyu Maitasamu, said the real onion farmers were captured and the support would serve as a relief in consideration of the challenges faced during the previous season.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items distributed included bags fertiliser, insecticides and liquid fertiliser, among others.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
