In a significant move to bolster security infrastructure, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has officially inaugurated 1.4 kilometers of newly constructed internal roads within the state police command headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo. This project, however, is just one component of a broader, strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the operational backbone of law enforcement agencies across the state.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Eno framed the road project not as a standalone gift, but as a critical investment in public safety. “These roads are strategic assets,” he stated, echoing the assessment of the State Commissioner of Police. “They are designed to enhance mobility, drastically reduce emergency response times, and improve the overall operational efficiency of the command. When our police can move swiftly and reliably within their own base, their effectiveness in protecting our communities multiplies.”
Beyond the asphalt, Governor Eno announced a more expansive plan: the installation of modern lighting facilities at police stations and formations statewide. This initiative addresses a common vulnerability. Well-lit premises are a fundamental deterrent to criminal activity, preventing concealment and improving surveillance capabilities for both officers and technology like CCTV. This move signals a shift from reactive policing to creating environments that proactively discourage crime.
The Governor used the platform to offer profound commendation to the security agencies in Akwa Ibom. “Your support has been massive. You work tirelessly to create the conducive environment necessary for sustainable development and progress,” Eno said. “Without the peace you tirelessly secure, the economic and social advancements we pursue would be impossible. You are doing a fantastic job, and we are greatly appreciative.” This recognition underscores the government’s view of security as the essential foundation for all other development sectors.
In a notable development, Governor Eno also thanked the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for approving the establishment of a Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area. This reveals a forward-looking approach to security, preparing specialized capabilities to address complex, evolving threats rather than just conventional crime, thereby future-proofing the state’s security architecture.
In his response, the State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, commended Governor Eno for his consistent and impactful prioritization of security. “Your support to the command has been remarkably consistent and impactful,” Azare stated. He highlighted that such infrastructural development directly translates to enhanced police performance, ultimately benefiting every citizen and business in the state.
This event marks a clear example of strategic state-level intervention in security. By directly investing in the infrastructure and working environment of the police, the Akwa Ibom government is not only boosting morale but also tangibly increasing the force’s capacity to serve and protect. The dual focus on immediate logistical improvements (roads and lights) and long-term strategic capability (the CTU) presents a holistic model for sub-national support to federal security institutions.
