SOKOTO, Nigeria — In a decisive move to counter a burgeoning security threat, the Sokoto State Police Command has issued a stark warning to youths and parents regarding a newly identified terrorist cult group, ‘Sai Malam.’ The alert comes amid heightened operations to dismantle criminal networks preying on vulnerable populations in the state.

Addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters, Commissioner of Police Mr. Ahmad Musa framed the threat within a broader, troubling pattern of exploitation. He revealed that the activities of ‘Sai Malam’ have sown fear across multiple communities, representing a dangerous fusion of cultism, spiritual manipulation, and terrorism that targets impressionable young people.

“This is not merely a criminal gang; it is a predatory cult that uses fear and superstition to recruit and control,” stated CP Musa. “We are calling on parents and guardians to be extraordinarily vigilant. Know your children’s associations, monitor their movements, and engage them in constant dialogue. The allure of such groups is often rooted in a promise of power, belonging, or spiritual protection, which we must counter with awareness and guidance.”

A Major Breakthrough: Cult Leader Arrested with Fetish Items

The police warning follows a significant operational success. Operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested Muhammad Muktar, identified as the leader and chief priest of the ‘Sai Malam’ cult. A search of his residence, which doubled as a shrine, yielded disturbing evidence: a large live python, banners inscribed with ‘SAI MALAM,’ and an array of fetish materials and charms.

Context & Analysis: The use of live animals and fetish objects is a known tactic among certain cults and terror groups in the region to instill awe, demonstrate supernatural authority, and psychologically bind recruits. This arrest is critical as removing the spiritual figurehead can disrupt the group’s cohesion and recruitment appeal. CP Musa described it as a major step toward the group’s complete dismantling.

A Related Case: Exploitation Under the Guise of a Peace Corps

In a related development that underscores the multifaceted nature of the threats facing youths, CP Musa disclosed the arrest of one Anas Sani. Sani allegedly conspired with three others—still at large—to use the cover of a ‘Peace Corps’ organization to perpetrate heinous crimes.

The Modus Operandi: The suspects are accused of luring unsuspecting young girls to a purported office located at GDSS Gidan Igwai, Sokoto. There, they allegedly intimidated and sexually assaulted them. In a particularly cruel twist, the acts were video-recorded. The footage was then used as blackmail to coerce the victims into repeated cycles of abuse, silencing them through shame and fear.

“To date, 28 victims have been identified,” CP Musa said, noting that the suspect has confessed. The case is under discreet investigation, with intense efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplices.

Practical Implication for the Public: This case is a grim reminder for families to verify the legitimacy of organizations their children engage with. Parents should be wary of groups that operate from non-descript or unofficial locations and should encourage open communication so children feel safe reporting coercion or abuse.

Police Reassurance and a Call for Collective Vigilance

Commissioner Musa reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, vowing that criminal elements would find no sanctuary in Sokoto State. The briefing also served as part of precautionary security measures for the yuletide season.

He concluded with a powerful call to action: “Security is a shared responsibility. We urge the public to remain law-abiding, celebrate responsibly, and most importantly, be our eyes and ears. If you see something suspicious—whether it’s unusual gatherings, new cultic symbols, or predatory behavior targeting youths—report it immediately. Your information could prevent a tragedy and is vital to sustaining peace in our communities.”

The Sokoto Police Command’s proactive disclosure aims not only to inform but to mobilize the entire community—youths, parents, and leaders—in a united front against evolving criminal and terroristic threats.
