Alumnus of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro and Lifelong Supporter of Student Dreams
By Aluta Journal
In every institution, there are names that transcend the pages of yearbooks and the plaques on the wall. At the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, one such name is Mr ILYAS ABUBAKRI OLANREWAJU — a proud alumnus whose legacy is not built on prestige or politics, but on passion, purpose, and people.
From Struggle to Success
Years ago, Ilyas Abubakri walked the same hallways, sat in the same classrooms, and faced the same challenges as many students encounter today. Born into modest circumstances, he knows how it feels to meet up tuition fees, buy textbooks, or even afford daily meals in school. But he held on — not only to his academic goals but also to the belief that education could change his life.
After earning his National Diploma in Computer science, the young Ilyas ventured into entrepreneurship. With integrity, persistence, and grace, he built a successful business empire in selling cars, logistics, real estate and Oil Downstream firm that now operates across Nigeria.
But for Mr. Ilyas, success was never about personal gain. It was about giving back.
Five Years of Impact
For the past 5 consecutive years, Mr. Olanrewaju has quietly and consistently paid the full tuition fees of over 25 students in every academic session. These beneficiaries are carefully selected based on need and academic potential, in collaboration with department heads, lecturers, and student leaders.
“I don’t give because I have too much,” he once said. “I give because I know what it feels like to have nothing and still want to learn.”
More than just a benefactor, Mr. Ilyas is a regular face on campus. He visits annually to mentor students, speak at leadership and entrepreneurship events, and encourage young minds to rise above limitations. His words resonate deeply: “When you rise, lift others too.”
A Quiet Hero with a Loud Impact
To many students, he is not just a sponsor — he is a lifesaver. Some call him “Baba DaDa” (Good Father), others refer to him as “The Light of Ilaro.” Whether it’s through a paid school fee, a job referral, or a single word of encouragement, Mr. Ilyas continues to shape lives in many ways numbers cannot quantify. His kindness has helped many students to avoid being dropped out, finish their education with dignity, and dream bigger than their backgrounds.
A Well-Deserved Honor
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Mr Ilyas Abubakri Olanrewaju will be honored at this year’s convocation ceremony with a Humanitarian Award — a tribute not just to his generosity, but to his unwavering belief in the power of education.
Still, if you ask him, he’ll humbly say:
“The true reward is watching one of those students I helped walk across the stage in their graduation gown. That’s worth more than any plaque or praise.”
The True Spirit of Ilaro
Mr. Ilyas Abubakri Olanrewaju exemplifies what it means to be a true alumnus of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro — resilient, compassionate, and committed to the next generation. His life reminds us all that while success is admirable, significance is unforgettable.
May his story inspire us , students, staff, and alumni alike, to remember our roots, lift others, and be a light wherever we go.
