NAF to Graduate 1,296 Recruits on Saturday: A Milestone in Modern Military Training

Kaduna, Dec. 18, 2025 (NAN) – The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to formally graduate 1,296 recruits from its Basic Military Training Course 45/2024 this Saturday in Kaduna, marking a significant infusion of new personnel into the nation’s aerial defense capabilities.
The ceremony, known as the ‘Beating of the Retreat,’ serves as the formal conclusion of the recruits’ intensive training cycle. The Guest of Honour, Air Vice Marshal Ahmad Shinkafi, emphasized that the event is not merely a procedural formality but a critical rite of passage that celebrates the recruits’ transformation from civilians into disciplined airmen and airwomen.
“This occasion not only celebrates their achievements but also recognises and rewards the hard work of those Squadrons and individuals who have distinguished themselves throughout this demanding training period,” Shinkafi stated.
He extended his congratulations to the recruits, acknowledging the formidable challenge they had overcome. “Your training has been rigorous, blending academic instruction with intensive outdoor and tactical exercises,” he said. This comment underscores a pivotal shift in NAF’s doctrine. The training now explicitly incorporates contemporary asymmetric warfare tactics—essential for countering insurgencies and non-state actors—while simultaneously enhancing the technical competencies required for a modern, technology-driven air force. This dual focus prepares recruits for the complex security landscape of the 21st century, where cyber threats and irregular warfare exist alongside traditional aerial combat roles.
As the recruits approach their final Passing Out Parade (POP), Shinkafi urged them to remain resolute. “This period was a true test of character and discipline. I have confidence that the values you have imbibed will guide you through this final stretch. Stay focused and uphold the standards that brought you this far.”
He then delivered a foundational principle of Nigeria’s military ethos: “Always remember your loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the importance of subordinating yourselves to civil authority.” This reminder is crucial in a democratic society, reinforcing the military’s role as a protector of the state, not its ruler.
A key highlight of the ‘Beating of the Retreat’ ceremony was the presentation of prizes to outstanding squadrons and individuals who excelled in academic and competitive activities. This practice, Shinkafi explained, is aligned with the NAF’s core principle of valuing excellence. “Excellence in performance leads to recognition and rewards. As members of the Nigerian Air Force, your commitment to these values is essential to effectively fulfilling our constitutional role of defending Nigeria’s national interests.”
The ceremony, therefore, serves a dual purpose: to celebrate past achievements and to motivate for future service. “This beating of the retreat was a way to celebrate their achievements and motivate them as they prepared to head into the field,” Shinkafi noted.
Offering final words of counsel, he told the recruits, “As you leave the training ground, embody the values of the Military Training Centre in both word and action.” He specifically congratulated the prize winners, especially the champion squadron, for exceptional performance. To those who did not receive awards, he offered encouragement: “Remember that reaching this point in your training is already an accomplishment in itself. Your journey in the Nigerian Air Force is just beginning.”
Shinkafi concluded by commending the leadership of the Military Training Centre, stating, “What we have witnessed today reflects your leadership and commitment to service excellence. I commend your team of instructors for their tireless efforts in molding these recruits into disciplined airmen and airwomen.”
The graduation of these 1,296 recruits represents a substantial boost to the NAF’s operational manpower. Their training, which now integrates asymmetric warfare and advanced technical skills, indicates the service’s adaptive evolution in response to current national security challenges. These new personnel will soon be deployed across various NAF commands, where their freshly honed skills will be put to the test in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
