In a timely message ahead of the festive season, the Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Mr. Bayo Omojola, has issued a heartfelt appeal for a peaceful and considerate Christmas and New Year celebration, emphasizing community harmony and responsible conduct.
Omojola, in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikole-Ekiti, framed the yuletide not merely as a period of festivity but as a profound opportunity for social cohesion and compassion. He elaborated that the season’s core spirit lies in “reaching out to the less privileged who require medical care, food, shelter and celebrating with loved ones,” positioning communal support as the cornerstone of a meaningful celebration.
Moving beyond general well-wishes, the Council Boss provided specific, actionable guidance for residents. His appeal was particularly directed at the youth, urging them to celebrate with modesty and to consciously avoid actions that could infringe on the peace and safety of others.
“I want to appeal to residents, indigenes, and especially youths in Ikole Local Government Area, to celebrate in a modest manner,” Omojola stated. He drew a clear distinction between joyous celebration and disruptive behavior, noting, “Christmas period is a time we all need to show love to our families, friends, and neighbours and not the time to drink to stupor and cause havoc on the streets.”
A significant point of caution was the use of fireworks, locally known as ‘Banga.’ Omojola highlighted the dangers and disturbances they cause, appealing directly to parents: “I wish to appeal to parents to caution their children against using fireworks… to disturb the elderly ones and residents of the community.” This call addresses common yuletide concerns including noise pollution, risk of fire outbreaks, and potential injuries, especially to children and the elderly.
In a gesture linking local governance to state leadership, Chairman Omojola also extended congratulations to the State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, on his 58th birthday. He described the Governor as “a special one sent by God to revive and stabilise the economy and development of Ekiti State,” and offered prayers for his health and wisdom to pilot the state’s affairs during his second term. This alignment underscores a unified governmental front wishing for a peaceful and productive period for all citizens.
Ultimately, the message from the Ikole council leadership reframes the yuletide as a test of community values. It is a call to prioritize safety, consideration for neighbours, and charitable spirit over unrestrained revelry, ensuring the festivities leave a positive, unifying legacy for Ikole-Ekiti.
