The National Examinations Council (NECO) community and the Wushishi family of Niger State are in mourning following the announcement of the passing of Alhaji Ibrahim Wushishi, father of the Council’s Registrar, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi. The esteemed community leader was 106 years old at the time of his death.

The news was formally communicated in a statement released by Mr. Azeez Sani, the acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NECO, on behalf of the bereaved Registrar. The statement, made available to the press in Abuja, confirms that Alhaji Ibrahim Wushishi has been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, a tradition that emphasizes prompt burial as a sign of respect for the departed.

Alhaji Wushishi’s passing marks the end of a life of remarkable longevity and significant influence. As a prominent figure in the Wushishi Local Government Area, his life spanned a century of profound change in Nigeria, from the colonial era through independence and into the 21st century. Community leaders of his generation often served as custodians of history, culture, and communal conflict resolution, playing a vital role in grassroots governance and social cohesion.

His legacy is firmly cemented in a large and thriving family. He is survived by 12 children, approximately 60 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. This extensive lineage is a testament to a life centered on family and community. Among his most distinguished descendants is his son, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, who currently leads one of Nigeria’s most critical educational institutions, NECO. The Council is responsible for administering the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for millions of Nigerian students, a role of national importance that underscores the family’s contribution to the nation’s educational fabric.

The loss of a patriarch at such an advanced age is a significant event that resonates on multiple levels. For the family, it is the passing of a direct link to their heritage and a unifying figure. For the academic and public service community, it is a moment to extend solidarity to Prof. Wushishi, whose leadership at NECO involves steering the integrity of national assessments—a demanding role that now coincides with personal grief. The public announcement through official channels reflects the intersection of personal bereavement with public office.

Condolences have begun to pour in from colleagues, associates, and the wider public, recognizing both the personal loss to the Wushishi family and the symbolic closing of a chapter for a generation that witnessed the shaping of modern Nigeria. The family, while mourning, also celebrates a life fully lived, leaving behind a robust legacy through his children, grandchildren, and the enduring impact of his community leadership.
