Fire guts Aforigwe market in Anambra

Onitsha (Anambra), Dec. 14, 2025 (NAN) An early morning fire on Sunday, gutted Umunnachi section of the age long popular Aforigwe Market, Umudioka community, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra, destroying  property worth millions of naira.

Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, the Fire Chief, Anambra Fire Service, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha.

Chiketa said  that the possible cause of the fire could be from  an electric spark, resulting  from restored power to the affected building.

He noted that the inferno started around 2:00 a.m but quick intervention of men of the fire service prevented it from spreading to adjourning buildings.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said that officials of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) stormed the market that is located along the Old Onitsha-Awka road, to disconnect the cables to avoid electrocution.

He listed the shops affected to include, shoes, provisions, bread depots, and  electrical appliances among others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
