The office of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has issued a forceful clarification to quell political speculation, stating unequivocally that the minister’s attention is entirely on executing the mandate given to him by President Bola Tinubu and not on the 2027 gubernatorial elections in Niger State.
The statement, released by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, in Abuja on Wednesday, serves as a significant damage-control exercise. It highlights the delicate balance public officials must maintain between their current duties and future political ambitions, a tension that can undermine public trust if not managed transparently.
Ibrahim explicitly disclaimed a write-up authored by another aide, Sa’idu Enagi, titled ‘Malagi 2027.’ The problematic piece engaged in political permutations regarding the Niger State governorship race, creating an impression of early campaign activity emanating from the minister’s circle. “The write-up and all its contexts are hereby vehemently disclaimed,” Ibrahim stated, adding, “The Minister is fully focused on his responsibility superintending the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation… and has no room for political distractions.”
The ministerial aide emphasized that the publication was neither directed nor approved by Idris. To underscore the seriousness of the breach, the minister has ordered an immediate investigation, and the aide in question has been suspended. This swift disciplinary action is a clear signal intended to reinforce the message of discipline and focus within the ministry.
Beyond internal discipline, the statement also aimed to mend potential political fences. Ibrahim explained that Minister Idris and the Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, “enjoy a positive and mutual relationship for the greater good of Niger.” He framed premature 2027 speculations as “inimical to these noble objectives,” suggesting that such discussions could be perceived as destabilizing or disrespectful to the sitting governor and the collaborative development agenda for the state.
